So you want a hotel room at the cheapest rate possible, and you think the new breed of comparison websites such as Trivago, Kayak, and Travelocity will do the shopping for you, right?

One hotel booking site doesn’t fit all, when my wife and I searched for quotes to spend a long weekend in Key West Florida we found some big differences!

We found that no single site produces guaranteed prices, and that travelers owe it to themselves to check more than one before buying.

Despite promising to find the best price, some of the comparison sites lead travelers into paying significantly more than others.

For example we searched for a long weekend in Key West this past June. Trivago found 14 sites offering rooms at the three star Best Western Ambassador hotel and stated that the cheapest was hotels.com at 265.00 a night. Kayak listed 7 sites offering rooms at the same hotel at the cheapest price of 285.00 a night thru Expedia. Travelocity did not even list the Best Western Ambassador. So the traveler would have spent more than he had to if he had used Kayak for the same hotel on the same nights.

Sometimes the sites said rooms were sold out when they were available elsewhere. For example TravelSupermarket said that the Best Western Ambassador was sold out, nothing available for the dates we selected, but using ReservationBooth.com  a tier 2 booking site that searches all the “booking sites” for deals, returned results of 2 rooms available, ocean view, with king size bed for 246.00 a night thru HotelClub.com.

Many people think that a big well-advertised site like Trivago would operate independently from the sites it is searching, but Expedia bought a big stake for about 400 million dollars. Same can be said for Kayak which was acquired by the Priceline Group for about 1 billion dollars.
Priceline also owns Booking.com and Agoda.com, while Expedia owns Venere.com and Hotwire.com
